Witsday is a free daily puzzle. You don’t need an account, and without one we never ask for your name, email or location.

What stays on your device

Your streaks, statistics and settings, and your Endless and Archive games, are saved in your browser’s local storage, on your device only. Clearing your browser data deletes them. We never receive them.

Checking today’s puzzle

While a day’s puzzle is live, its answers stay on our server and each guess is checked there. With each guess your browser sends a random ID it made up for this site. The ID doesn’t contain your name, email or anything else about you; it lets a reload or a second tab carry on where you left off. We keep your guesses, your score and when you played, and use the scores to show how you compare with other players (“you beat 78% of players”). We delete them after about a year; only anonymous totals (how many players got each score) are kept.

Your IP address is used briefly to block abuse, such as too many requests at once, and isn’t stored.

Accounts (optional)

Every game works without an account. If you sign in, with Google or with a code sent to your email, we keep your email address, the name you choose for leaderboards, your age band (13–17, or 18 and over; never your birthday) and the daily games you play while signed in, including those this browser played before you signed in, and your ranked Blitz runs. Sign-in codes are emailed by Resend (resend.com), our email provider. Other players never see your email. If you join a group, its members see your leaderboard name and daily scores on the group’s boards; anyone with a group’s invite link sees its name and how many members it has. From your account you can download all of this, or delete the account and its games in one step (a group you started passes to its longest-standing member).

If you sign in with Google, we receive only your email address and Google’s id for your account: never your name, photo, contacts or anything else in your Google account. We use them only to sign you in and to recognise your account next time, keep them until you delete the account, and never sell or share them or use them for ads. Our use of information received from Google follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.

Pro (optional)

Pro is sold by Paddle (paddle.com), our reseller and merchant of record, who take the payment and handle tax and receipts. We never see your card. For an account with Pro we keep whether it has Pro, Paddle’s ids for the subscription and the customer, and when the paid period ends.

Challenge links

When you challenge a friend, the link contains the puzzle number, your result grid and the name you typed (if any). Anyone you send the link to can see those. Leave the name blank if you prefer.

Analytics

We may use a privacy-friendly analytics service to count visits and anonymous game events (for example that a puzzle was started, finished or shared). This helps us decide what to build. It doesn’t identify you and isn’t used for advertising.

Advertising

If we show ads, they appear only after you finish a puzzle and are provided by Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies to show and measure ads; see how Google uses information from sites that use its services. Where the law requires it (for example in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland), you’ll be asked for consent first.

Children

Witsday is a general-audience trivia game and isn’t directed at children under 13.
